G Wood

R Maiden

Very easy to work through the processes and very competitive on price, bearing in mind I'm 82 and my wife is 74, together with our medical histories.

J Kelson

I was researching cruise insurance cover which included some existing medical conditions. Total Travel Protection was the only one that was reasonably priced with the cover I needed. The website was well set out and easy to use.

Travel insurance cover when you are on a waiting list? No problem!

Just because you are on a waiting list for treatment doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to travel and enjoy a holiday abroad; after all, you could be on a waiting list for months or even years.

Total Travel Protection travel insurance can cover your trip if you are on a waiting list for treatment or investigation, provided the condition is diagnosed. See below for what isn’t covered in your insurance policy.

Please note: If you are awaiting an initial diagnosis for symptoms you are experiencing, we cannot provide travel insurance cover until you have a confirmed diagnosis.

Can you get travel insurance cover whilst waiting for surgery or treatment?

Our travel insurance policies offer cover for medical conditions you’ve declared to us, even while you’re on a waiting list. While awaiting treatment or investigation won’t affect your medical cover while you’re away, there are a couple of exclusions for cancellation or curtailment.

Without the optional additional waiting list cover, you won’t be covered for cancellation or curtailment if:

  • You receive a treatment or investigation appointment that conflicts with your planned trip dates.
  • The awaited treatment prevents you from travelling as planned.

This is where our optional waiting list cover comes in handy. This option provides cancellation and curtailment cover for the following scenarios:

  • You receive an appointment for treatment that conflicts with your trip.
  • You’re unable to travel due to the treatment or investigation you were awaiting.

With this added optional cover, you can cancel or cut short your holiday and make a claim to recoup the costs, up to the amount stated in your schedule of benefits. Keep in mind that if you wanted the waiting list cover to ensure everyone travelling with you could cancel their trip, then they would also need to be covered on the same policy and have the waiting list cover option added too.

Additional waiting list cover for extra protection

You can choose to extend your waiting-list travel insurance policy to include additional cancellation and curtailment cover. Simply add our Additional Waiting List Cover option to your policy.

Adding this cover would give you the option to cancel or curtail your holiday and make a claim to recoup the cost (up to the amount stated in your schedule of benefits) if you received a treatment date that conflicted with your trip.

Top tips for travelling while waiting for surgery

Travelling while awaiting a medical procedure requires a little extra preparation. To ensure your trip is as stress-free as possible, follow these expert tips:

Be 100% Transparent:

When getting your quote, declare the condition you are waiting for surgery on, even if it feels minor. Failing to disclose a "pending" procedure is the most common reason for claims being rejected.

Keep Your Surgeon in the Loop:

Before booking, ask your consultant if you are "fit to travel." Having a brief note from your GP or specialist confirming you are stable can be invaluable if you need to make a claim later.

The "Two-Week Rule":

Try to avoid booking travel within two weeks of a potential surgery date. Even if your date hasn't been set yet, consider the typical recovery time for your procedure and leave a "buffer zone" in your calendar. Patients can also refer to the NHS Constitution for more information on what to expect while waiting for treatment.

Carry Your "Waiting List" Paperwork:

Keep a digital or paper copy of your latest hospital correspondence. If you need medical treatment abroad, local doctors will benefit from knowing exactly what your diagnosis is and what treatment is planned.

Check Your Destination’s Facilities:

If you are waiting for a specific issue (like a heart, cancer or hip condition), research the nearest hospital to your hotel. Knowing there is a specialist facility nearby provides immense peace of mind.

Monitor Your Phone/Email:

If you are on an "on-call" or short-notice list, ensure you have a way for the hospital to reach you. If the NHS calls with a date while you are away, our Waiting List Cover protects your holiday costs if you have to fly home or cancel.

Waiting list travel insurance FAQ

Yes, provided you are fit to travel, you are awaiting an operation for a diagnosed condition, and you have declared all of your existing medical conditions to us.

Our standard cover excludes cancellation and curtailment in this situation. However, if you extend your policy to include our Additional Waiting List Cover, it will then include cancellation and curtailment cover if you receive an appointment which conflicts with your trip.

More information about Additional Waiting List Cover >>

Only if she is insured on the same policy as you and has also added our Additional Waiting List Cover.

The short answer is yes! Being on a waiting list for medical treatment doesn’t mean you have to put your travel dreams on hold. Total Travel Protection can provide optional extra cover even if you are awaiting treatment or investigation for a diagnosed medical condition. This means you can explore new destinations, visit family, or simply enjoy a much-needed break without hesitation.

However, there are some limitations. If you are awaiting an initial diagnosis for symptoms you’re experiencing, travel insurance coverage will not be provided until you have a confirmed diagnosis.

You may be able to get travel insurance if you are under investigation, but it depends on the situation. If you are awaiting a confirmed diagnosis, many specialist providers will not cover you until a diagnosis has been made. However, once you have a diagnosed condition and you are under investigation or awaiting treatment for it, cover may be available as long as you declare all medical details. If you are still experiencing symptoms without a diagnosis, insurers may be unable to offer cover until your condition is confirmed.

You may be able to get travel insurance if you are on an NHS waiting list, provided you meet certain conditions. Specialist providers such as Total Travel Protection can cover travellers who are awaiting treatment for a diagnosed medical condition, as long as they are fit to travel and have declared all medical details.

However, standard policies typically do not include cancellation or curtailment cover if your treatment date changes unless you add optional waiting list cover. Emergency medical cover while abroad is still provided as long as your condition is declared.

Yes, you should always inform your insurance provider immediately if your medical situation changes. This includes:

  • A change in diagnosis
  • A worsening of your condition
  • Receiving a treatment or surgery date
  • Changes to your ability to travel

Failing to update your insurer could affect the validity of your cover and may result in claims being declined. Keeping your policy up to date ensures you remain fully protected.

Not necessarily. Many people on waiting lists or awaiting treatment can still travel safely, provided they are fit to do so and have medical clearance if needed. Travel insurance is available for those in this situation, and specialist providers can offer cover tailored to your condition.

However, you should consider:

  • Whether your condition could worsen unexpectedly
  • The risk of receiving a surgery date that clashes with your trip
  • Whether you have adequate cancellation cover (e.g. optional waiting list cover)

Ultimately, the decision should be based on medical advice and personal circumstances.

If you are awaiting surgery but do not yet have a confirmed diagnosis, most travel insurers will not be able to provide full cover until your condition is diagnosed. Travel insurance policies typically require a clear, diagnosed medical condition so they can properly assess risk and provide appropriate cover.

Once a diagnosis is confirmed, you can usually obtain cover that includes pre-existing conditions and waiting list situations. If you are unsure, it’s best to speak directly with a specialist provider before booking your trip.
