Already Abroad Travel Insurance FAQ

While the vast majority of insurers require you to buy a policy before you pass through airport security, specialised "already travelled" or "already left" insurance allows you to buy cover while sitting in a hotel room or on the move. You must buy it within 14 days of leaving the UK to qualify for our main policy.

To prevent fraudulent claims (such as someone buying a policy only after they break a leg), most already-abroad travel insurance policies carry a 24-hour to 48-hour waiting period before the medical and cancellation cover officially kicks in. Emergency medical cover resulting from a sudden, unexpected accident is usually active immediately.

If you purchase a standard travel insurance policy while you are already in another country, the policy will be completely invalid. If a claim arises and they discover you bought the policy while abroad, the claim will be rejected, and you will be personally liable for all medical bills. Always buy our dedicated "already left the UK" cover instead.
