Tips for travelling with epilepsy

Consult your doctor

Before you travel, speak with your healthcare provider to assess your fitness for the trip. They can advise you on adjusting your medications for time zone changes, recommend seizure triggers to avoid, and provide a letter explaining your condition and treatment plan in case of emergencies.

Bring extra medication

Pack more medication than you think you’ll need to cover potential delays or unexpected extensions to your trip. Always keep your medication in its original packaging, along with your prescription and a doctor’s note, in case you are questioned at security or need replacements.

Plan ahead

Research the medical facilities at your destination, particularly if you’re visiting a remote area or a country where language barriers might exist. Save local emergency numbers and details for the nearest hospital or clinic.

Avoid known seizure triggers

Travelling can sometimes expose you to new environments that may include seizure triggers, such as flashing lights, fatigue, or stress.

Inform travel providers

If you have specific needs, such as requiring assistance at airports or onboard flights, inform your airline or travel provider in advance. They can help make your journey more comfortable and ensure you’re supported if a medical situation arises.

Travel insurance for cruise holidays

When you get a quote for travel insurance with us, you will be asked ‘Are you going on a cruise?’. If you select yes, our optional cruise extension will be automatically included in your quote, providing these additional benefits:

• Cabin confinement cover

• Missed port departure protection

• Itinerary change compensation

• Unused excursions reimbursement

• Cruise interruption cover

You can remove the extension on the Additional Cover Options page, where you’ll also see the premium. Without it, standard cover still applies, and you will be covered to go on a cruise holiday, but you won’t receive these extra benefits.
