Travel Insurance for over 75s FAQ
Of course! Our over 75s policies will also cover your mobility aids, including mobility scooters, wheelchairs and walking frames for loss, theft or damage whilst you are away up to £2,500.
Yes. It’s important that you list all of the countries that you will be visiting when you buy our travel insurance for over 75s. This is so that you will be covered for emergency medical expenses in all of those countries.
The USA is a very expensive destination when it comes to travel insurance simply because the cost of obtaining medical treatment there is very expensive. The most important part of a travel insurance policy, whether you are over 75 or not, is the cover it provides for emergency medical expenses abroad, therefore the cost of medical treatment in your destination country has a big impact on the price of your insurance.
Yes! Although we specialise in holiday insurance for over 75s, we can cover people of any age and if you are all travelling together it makes sense to be on the same travel insurance policy.
The cost of travel insurance for over 75s is not fixed and depends on several factors. These include your destination, trip duration, level of cover chosen, and any pre-existing medical conditions you declare. For example, trips to countries with high healthcare costs, such as the USA, are usually more expensive to insure due to the higher cost of medical treatment abroad. Policies are tailored to each traveller, meaning premiums are calculated individually.
Travel insurance premiums often increase once you reach the age of 75. This is because insurers typically associate older age groups with a higher likelihood of needing medical treatment while abroad. However, specialist providers such as Total Travel Protection offer policies with no upper age limit, ensuring you can still obtain comprehensive cover tailored to your needs rather than being excluded due to age.
Over 75s can reduce the cost of travel insurance by making smart choices when purchasing a policy. This includes selecting only the level of cover you need, avoiding unnecessary add-ons, and choosing destinations where medical costs are lower. It is also important to accurately declare any medical conditions, as this ensures correct pricing and prevents issues later. Comparing quotes from specialist providers can also help secure better value.
Travel insurance is strongly recommended for over 75s. It provides essential protection in case of unexpected events such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost belongings, or the need for repatriation to the UK. With cover available for emergency medical expenses up to £10 million (on higher-tier policies), travel insurance offers vital financial protection and peace of mind when travelling abroad.
Even if you hold a GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card), travel insurance is still recommended. A GHIC only provides access to state-provided healthcare in certain countries and does not cover private medical treatment, emergency repatriation, cancellation costs, or lost or stolen belongings. Travel insurance fills these gaps, offering much more comprehensive protection during your trip.
Over 75s travel insurance can provide worldwide cover, as long as your destination is not subject to Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advice against non-essential travel. This means you can be insured for holidays across Europe and beyond, provided you list all countries you plan to visit when purchasing your policy to ensure full coverage.
