Travel Insurance for allergies
Travelling with allergies can be stressful, especially when you are far from home and unsure what ingredients or environmental triggers you might encounter.
Whether you have mild food sensitivities or severe allergies that require an EpiPen, having the right travel insurance for allergies or anaphylaxis is important.
Why travel insurance matters if you have allergies
If you live with allergies, specialist travel insurance is an essential part of your travel planning. Travelling exposes you to new foods, climates, and environments, all of which may increase your risk. Having travel insurance tailored to allergies means you will have support if you need medical treatment or even repatriation back to the UK.
Allergic reactions can happen unexpectedly, even when you are careful. Specialist cover ensures you are financially protected if you need emergency medical care after an allergic reaction.
Does travel insurance cover allergies?
Yes, travel insurance can cover allergies, but as always, it’s important to declare your allergy as well as any other pre-existing medical condition when you get your quote. Choose a policy that covers your condition and provides the right level of protection. Cover can typically include emergency medical treatment if you experience a reaction abroad, replacement of lost or damaged allergy medication such as antihistamines or EpiPens, financial cover for hospitalisation and repatriation if your condition becomes severe, and trip cancellation or curtailment if an allergic episode prevents you from travelling. A specialist travel insurer like Total Travel Protection offers policies that are designed for people with medical conditions, ensuring you have cover that reflects your individual needs.
Anaphylaxis and severe allergies
Severe allergies that cause anaphylaxis require extra consideration when travelling. Even if you manage your condition carefully, unexpected exposure to allergens such as nuts, insect stings, or certain medications can lead to a medical emergency. Travel insurance for severe allergies ensures that if anaphylaxis occurs, you can access emergency treatment without facing large out-of-pocket costs. This may include hospital admission, urgent care, and, if necessary, repatriation back to your home country. When planning a trip, check the availability of emergency medical services in your destination and always carry your medication. Travel insurance can also provide round-the-clock medical assistance and coordination with local hospitals if you need urgent care.
Declaring allergies on your travel insurance
Allergies are considered a pre-existing medical condition, which means they must be declared when you take out travel insurance. Declaring your allergies ensures that your policy accurately reflects your medical needs and that you are protected if an allergic reaction affects your trip. Commonly declared allergies include food allergies such as nuts, shellfish, and dairy; insect sting allergies; and reactions to certain medications. When completing a quote, you will be asked about your medical history, the severity of your allergies, and whether you carry medication such as an EpiPen. This information allows the insurer to tailor your cover and provide appropriate protection.

Flying with allergies: What you need to know
If you are planning to fly, it’s important to make sure you are fit to travel and well-prepared. Always carry your EpiPen or other prescribed medication in your hand luggage, along with a copy of your prescription or a doctor’s letter explaining your medical needs. Most airlines allow passengers with allergies to bring their own safe food on board and will make reasonable adjustments to minimise risks. For those with severe nut allergies, it’s a good idea to inform the airline in advance so they can take precautions, such as making an announcement or adjusting onboard catering. Travel insurance can offer additional reassurance by offering financial protection for any medical issues that arise during your journey.
