Tips for Travelling with a Heart Condition
Managing a heart condition shouldn’t stop you from seeing the world, provided you pace yourself and plan ahead.
- Request airport assistance: If long walks through terminals are taxing, pre-book a buggy or wheelchair service.
- Keep medication in hand luggage: Always carry your heart medication in your carry-on bag in case your hold luggage is delayed.
- Mind the altitude: High altitudes can put extra strain on the heart; consult your cardiologist if you are travelling to mountainous regions.
- Monitor the temperature: Extreme heat or cold can affect your heart rate and blood pressure; plan indoor activities during peak heat.
- Carry a recent ECG: Having a copy of your most recent ECG or a summary of your condition can help local doctors if you need treatment.
- Know your limits: Avoid heavy lifting—use four-wheeled suitcases that are easy to manoeuvre through the airport.
