Medical travel insurance for cruise holidays

Specialised Cruise Insurance for Over 50s

When you get a quote for travel insurance with us, you will be asked ‘Are you going on a cruise?’ If you select yes, our optional cruise extension will be automatically included in your quote, providing these additional benefits:

• Cabin confinement cover

• Missed port departure protection

• Itinerary change compensation

• Unused excursions reimbursement

• Cruise interruption cover

You can remove the extension on the Additional Cover Options page, where you’ll also see the premium. Without it, standard cover still applies, and you will be covered to go on a cruise holiday, but you won’t receive these extra benefits.

Over 50s travel insurance FAQ

We certainly can! We specialise in cover for the over-50s, but if you’re travelling as part of a group that includes younger holidaymakers, we’ll be glad to tailor a solution that covers your whole party.

Of course! Our policies will also cover your mobility aids for loss, theft or damage whilst you are away.

As standard, the travel insurance policies we provide to over-50s include cover for many pursuits, such as trekking and hiking to a height of up to 2000 metres.

We can also extend your cover to include hiking or trekking up to 3000 metres if you’re feeling more adventurous. We don’t believe that your interests should be limited by your date of birth!

More information about cover for sports and activities >>

Please note: our extended cover for sports and activities is only available up to the age of 75.

You should purchase your travel insurance policy as soon as you book your holiday. The moment your policy is active, your cancellation cover begins. If you have to cancel your trip due to unexpected illness, a flare-up of a medical condition, or a family emergency before you fly, you can claim back your non-refundable expenses.

Yes, a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) is not a substitute for comprehensive travel insurance. While a GHIC provides access to state-backed emergency medical treatment in EU countries at the same cost as a local, it does not cover everything. A GHIC will not pay for mountain rescue, emergency private healthcare, lost luggage, trip cancellation, or the incredibly high costs of medical repatriation back to the UK.

If you plan to travel two or more times a year, even if those trips are short weekend breaks or domestic UK holidays, an annual multi-trip policy is usually more cost-effective and saves you the hassle of buying a new policy every time. However, if you are planning just one major holiday or a single trip lasting longer than 31 consecutive days, a dedicated single-trip policy may offer greater flexibility.

To ensure your policy is completely valid, you must declare all pre-existing medical conditions for which you take prescribed medication, manage with treatment, or have seen a doctor about within the last two years (and up to five years for certain heart, circulatory, or respiratory conditions). Failing to declare a condition or medication could result in a claim being rejected if you fall ill abroad.

Insurers calculate premiums based on statistical risk. As we age, the likelihood of requiring emergency medical treatment or needing to cancel a trip due to health reasons increases. Furthermore, the cost of overseas emergency medical care and repatriation can run into tens of thousands of pounds. Our specialised policies help keep these costs fair and transparent, and are built around your specific health requirements without relying on arbitrary age brackets.

Yes! If you choose our annual multi-trip cover, holidays within England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are fully covered. To qualify for UK holiday protection, your trip generally needs to be at least 25 miles from your home address and include at least two consecutive nights of pre-booked accommodation. This protects you against unexpected cancellation, loss of luggage, or damage to your mobility aid right here at home.
