Tips for Travelling with Asthma
A change in climate or altitude can affect your airways, so keep your treatment plan at the forefront of your trip.
- Check your peak flow: Know your baseline before you go so you can monitor any changes while away.
- Pack a spare spacer: If you use a spacer with your inhaler, bring a spare in case one gets lost or damaged.
- Avoid high-pollen areas: Check the local pollen forecast if hay fever is a trigger for your asthma.
- Mind the air-con: Some air conditioning units can be dusty or very dry; if you feel tight-chested, try using a humidifier in the room.
- Carry an Asthma Attack Card: Carry a card that explains what to do in an emergency, translated into the local language.
Organisations such as Asthma + Lung UK provide trusted, evidence-based guidance on managing asthma, including tips on medication and travelling safely. Their resources are reviewed by healthcare professionals and regularly updated to reflect the latest clinical guidance.
Asthma Travel Insurance FAQ
We can cover all types of asthma up to a high level of severity, including allergic asthma, seasonal asthma, occupational asthma, non-allergic asthma and exercise-induced asthma.
It is important to declare asthma and any other medical conditions you may have when you buy travel insurance so that you will have appropriate cover for emergency medical treatment abroad if you need it, as well as cancellation if you become unwell before your holiday.
If you become ill due to a pre-existing medical condition, such as asthma, that you had not declared on your policy, you would not be covered by your travel insurance and your claim could be declined or only partially paid.
When you get a travel insurance quotation, whether online or by phone, you will be given the opportunity to declare all your pre-existing medical conditions, including asthma.
Once you tell us that you have asthma, you will be asked a short series of multiple-choice questions, such as how many medicines you have been prescribed by your doctor and if you have had any unplanned hospital admissions for your asthma in the last year.
This will give us an idea of how stable and well-managed your asthma is, and therefore the risk of you needing emergency treatment whilst you are away.
Our medical screening only takes a few minutes and can be done online or by phone.
Asthma can affect your travel insurance, as it is classed as a pre-existing medical condition.
However, it doesn’t mean you can’t get cover. With Total Travel Protection:
- A range of types of asthma can be covered, from mild to severe
- You simply need to declare your condition during medical screening
Once declared, your policy can include cover for emergency treatment, cancellation and medical expenses abroad.
Many people with severe asthma can fly safely, as long as their condition is well managed.
Before travelling, you should:
- Speak to your doctor or asthma nurse
- Ensure you have enough medication (including inhalers)
- Check airline policies if you have additional medical needs
Having the right asthma travel insurance ensures you’re covered if you need treatment while abroad.
Asthma is a long-term lung condition that affects breathing, but severity can vary.
- Mild asthma: Symptoms are occasional and usually well controlled with minimal medication
- Moderate to severe asthma: Symptoms are more frequent and may require regular medication or hospital care
Travel insurance providers assess your asthma based on its severity, stability and treatment, which is why medical screening is important.
