Single trip travel insurance FAQ

What is single trip travel insurance?

Single trip travel insurance provides cover for a specific trip or holiday.

For your cover to be valid your policy must cover you for your entire trip, starting on the day you leave home and finishing on the day you arrive back home again.

  • For single trips up to 94 days in duration
  • Cover for any country in the world (so long as the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is not advising against all or all but essential travel.

If you’re going on multiple trips in the next 365 days, it might be worth considering our annual travel insurance that covers the same as our single trip insurance.

What information do I need to get a single trip insurance quotation?

To get single trip travel insurance to cover your holiday you will need to tell us;

  • The start and end dates of your holiday (the dates you leave home and return home again, remember this could be the day after you leave the resort if you have a night flight).
  • all the countries you will be travelling to
  • details of those to be insured on the policy, including their dates of birth.
  • details of any pre-existing medical conditions for each traveller

Is there a limit on the length of my one trip you can cover?

The maximum duration of our single trip travel insurance is 94 days, which allows for a trip of up to 3 months.

What destinations does your single trip travel insurance cover?

Our single trip travel insurance can cover any country, or combination of countries in the world, so long as the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office are not advising against all or all but essential travel.

Can you provide cover to travel against Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advice?

No, our single trip travel insurance is designed to cover holidays and leisure trips, not high-risk destinations.

Who can be covered by single trip insurance?

Single trip travel insurance from Total Travel Protection can cover anyone going on a specific holiday or trip, with no upper age limit. Policies can include:

  • Travellers with pre-existing medical conditions
  • Older travellers with no upper age limit
  • Families or groups, even if travelling companions are younger or older than you

Your policy can be tailored to cover everyone on the same trip, ensuring that all travellers are protected under one plan.

Does single trip travel insurance cover cancellation?

Yes, single trip insurance includes cancellation cover, usually up to £6,000 with Platinum Cover. This can reimburse you if you need to cancel your trip due to:

  • Illness, injury, or death
  • Pre-existing medical conditions that suddenly worsen (if declared)
  • Other unforeseen circumstances affecting your ability to travel

Optional extras like waiting list cover or additional cancellation protection can also be added for more flexibility.

How much is single trip travel insurance?

The cost of single trip travel insurance depends on:

  • The traveller’s age
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Trip duration
  • Destination(s)
  • Level of cover selected

Because each policy is personalised, there is no fixed price. You can get an instant quotation online or speak to an expert for guidance.

Is one trip insurance more expensive than annual travel insurance?

Single trip insurance can be more expensive per trip compared to annual (multi-trip) cover if you travel frequently during the year. Annual travel insurance covers multiple trips within a 12-month period, which can be more cost-effective if you plan several holidays.

If you only travel once a year or take a short break, single trip insurance is ideal and gives tailored coverage for that specific journey.

When should I start my single trip insurance cover?

Single trip insurance should start on the day you leave home for your holiday and continue until you return home. You should purchase it:

  • As soon as you have booked your trip to ensure you are covered for cancellation
  • Before making any non-refundable payments
  • Early enough to allow for medical screening if you have pre-existing conditions

Starting your policy in time guarantees protection from the moment you leave for your trip.

Do I need single trip travel insurance if I have a GHIC/EHIC card?

Yes. A GHIC (or EHIC) only covers state-provided medical treatment in certain countries. It does not cover:

  • Emergency medical repatriation
  • Private medical care abroad
  • Cancellation or trip interruption
  • Lost, stolen, or delayed baggage
  • Pre-existing medical conditions

Single trip travel insurance from Total Travel Protection provides comprehensive protection, including 24-hour emergency assistance, mobility aids, prescription medication, and cover for pre-existing medical conditions.

This ensures that you are fully protected for all aspects of your trip, not just emergency treatment.
