What they say About us

Chris B

Needing worldwide travel insurance for a couple in 60s with minor health conditions turned into a cost headache.
Came across Total travel protection, website was so easy to navigate and much simpler sensible questions for conditions. Price was well below competition and offered great protection

Judith H

Quick and easy to do. Everything was explained clearly and professionally in no time at all. Would recommend for over 60.

Melinda

I really liked the website. My husband and I have some medical conditions and declaring them was much easier and quicker than many other sites. The price quoted was by far the most competitive.

Kathleen S

After struggling to find insurance that wasn’t an astronomical price because we are in our seventies and with existing medical conditions , it was a relief to be offered a policy at a fair price. Easy to complete online and so far have nothing but praise for Total Travel Protection.

Paul B

Easily negotiable website, and a comprehensive range of options with sensible costs, particularly for medical declarations.

Travel Insurance for over 60s FAQ

We certainly can! Although we specialise in travel insurance for over 60s, we can cover people of any age and if you are all travelling together it makes sense to be on the same travel insurance policy.

Of course! Our policies will also cover your mobility aids, including mobility scooters, wheelchairs and walking frames for loss, theft or damage whilst you are away up to £2500.

Absolutely! As standard, the travel insurance policies we provide to over 60s include cover for many pursuits such as trekking and hiking to a height of up to 2000 metres.

We can also extend your cover to include hiking or trekking up to a height of 3000 metres if you’re feeling more adventurous.

More information about cover for sports and activities >>

Please note: our extended cover for sports and activities is only available up to the age of 75.

Yes. It’s important that you list all of the countries that you will be visiting when you buy our travel insurance for over 60s. This is so that you will be covered for emergency medical expenses in all of those countries.

Travel insurance is designed to cover the cost of unexpected, emergency medical expenses whilst you are away. It is expensive to buy cover for the USA because although they have one of the best medical systems in the world, it is very expensive to get treatment there. Medical bills from the USA can be considerably more expensive than medical bills from other countries.

Travel insurance can become more expensive once you reach your 60s, but not simply because of age alone. Pricing is based on risk, which may increase slightly with age due to a higher likelihood of needing medical treatment while abroad.

However, with Total Travel Protection, being over 60 does not prevent you from getting cover. Policies are tailored individually, and you can still access comprehensive protection with no upper age limit and cover for pre-existing medical conditions.

You should buy travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. This ensures you are covered for unexpected events such as cancellation from the moment you make your first payment.

Buying early is especially important if you have pre-existing medical conditions or complex travel plans, as it ensures you are protected well before your departure date.

Yes, you still need travel insurance even if you have a GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). A GHIC only provides access to state-provided healthcare in certain European countries and does not cover:

  • Emergency medical repatriation back to the UK
  • Private medical treatment abroad
  • Trip cancellation or interruption
  • Lost, stolen, or delayed baggage
  • Pre-existing medical conditions

Over 60s travel insurance provides much broader protection, ensuring you are fully covered for unexpected costs and emergencies.

Several factors influence the cost of over 60s travel insurance, including:

  • Your age
  • Any pre-existing medical conditions you declare
  • Your destination (e.g. USA vs Europe)
  • Length of your trip
  • Level of cover selected

Medical conditions and travel destinations are often the most significant pricing factors, as they directly impact potential medical costs abroad.

You may still be able to get cover if you are on a waiting list, provided it relates to a diagnosed medical condition and you are fit to travel.

However, cover may not include cancellation or curtailment caused by your treatment date unless additional protection is added. If your condition is still undiagnosed, you may need to wait until a diagnosis is confirmed before full cover can be offered.

This depends on the type of policy you choose. Over 60s travel insurance is commonly available as:

If you travel frequently, annual cover may be more convenient, while single trip insurance is ideal for one-off holidays or longer individual trips.
